Kids, families, and friends - join the Summer of HeART participants and artists for a joyful celebration of achievement. Featuring an artist showcase, performances by Bichini Bia Congo Dance Theater Company, and an ice cream social. This free event invites you to celebrate with one another, YAA teaching artists and community partners. All supplies and ice cream provided.

Theater workshop led by Dana Pittman. Jump into a story of your own creation! In our creative drama sessions, you’ll learn how to use your mind, bodies, and imaginations to tell a story.
Music and songwriting workshop with Kyle Love. Cultivate your original sound and inner voice using unique writing techniques in a safe space to express yourself.

Kids ages 5 & up, express yourself, make art, learn rhythms and explore the world at Summer of HeART with Youth Arts Alliance. This free eight-week series invites you to try new things with YAA teaching artists and community partners. All supplies and a snack provided.
Each day’s activities will be different. The lineup is offered by YAA Teaching Artists & community partners:
Youth Congolese Drumming and Dancing with Bichini Bia Congo Dance Theater Company:
Learn the art of Congolese drumming! Students will learn the basic techniques for hand drumming along with songs and accompanying instrumentation as they learn a variety of traditional Congolese rhythms. Drums and instruments will be provided on a first come first served basis and participants are also welcome to bring their own instruments. Sessions will be taught by members of the Bichini Bia Congo Dance Theater Company along with the company founder Biza Sompa (born and trained in Congo - Brazzaville). Students will be invited to participate in a final performance with the company at the end of the program.
Join us for this one-of-a-kind opportunity for your child to learn Congolese dance! Dancers will learn a variety of basic movements for Congolese cultural and contemporary dances. Participants should wear loose clothing or dancewear that allows for free movement and be prepared to dance in bare feet (unless outside). Sessions will be taught by members of the Bichini Bia Congo Dance Theater Company along with the company founder Biza Sompa (born and trained in Congo - Brazzaville). Students will be invited to participate in a final performance with the company at the end of the program.

Science Savvy Kids Club workshops led by Tamara Tucker-Ibarisha. Do you love science? Do you like to investigate and explore? If you do, then the Savvy Science Kids Club is just for you! We will investigate the world around us using the process of science and techniques that span the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Each session will be centered around a new theme and will include dynamic lessons, hands-on lab activities, and a project that kids can take home. We will also talk about careers in STEM and meet professionals from those fields! Activities are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards and are designed to engage all learners.

Art in the Park
Art class doesn’t have to stop after school is done! This summer, once a month, join us for an evening of creativity and community building with other talented young adults. Prompts and activities led by teaching artist Kayla Hope, art supplies and dinner provided. Late teens to twenty-somethings invited!
Music Workshop
During this 8 week workshop participants will work with members of Chill Place, teaching artists Kyle Love, Pranav Surendran, and Joel Harris to explore songwriting, beatmaking and guitar. The studio space offers a space to record and practice songs, resulting in their own collection of music at the end of the program.
Participating artists are currently incarcerated at the Monroe County Youth Center.

Participants will get the opportunity to express themselves through music and visual arts in this summer residency. By the end of the week, participants will have created a mural from start to finish with teaching artist Gabrielle Schaub, and engaged with a whole music studio worth of instruments in order to make original music in partnership with Gift of Music.
Participating artists are currently incarcerated at the Muskegon County Juvenile Detention Center.
Visual Arts & Mindfulness
Youth Arts Alliance’s very own Founding Director Heather Martin will be leading a series of diverse and creative visual art and thoughtfulness activities for participants, alongside a rotation of teaching artists.
Participating artists are currently incarcerated at the Jackson County Youth Center.
Music & Mural Residency
Participants will get the opportunity to express themselves through music and visual arts in this summer residency. By the end of the week, participants will have created a mural from start to finish with teaching artist Gabrielle Schaub, and engaged with a whole music studio worth of instruments in order to make original music in partnership with Gift of Music.
Participating artists are currently incarcerated at the Muskegon County Juvenile Detention Center.
